CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The entire village was in a heightened sense of alarm, the Priestess having dispatched her strongest warriors, who were fanned out defensively, weapons poised, on watch, in anticipation of any hostile encroachment. The tribe had brought in as much food and fresh water as possible and were gathered in the heart of the village, urgently preparing for the worst, in case they ended up coming under siege.

A tense, anxious atmosphere permeated all around and the defensive readiness had been precipitated by the return of three of the Mall Rats – Trudy, Jay, and Bray, in that order.

All had been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions during the day - and it was all so different when Trudy was the first to make her return in the afternoon, Connor having anchored the Nemo further down the shallows near the beach for fear of running aground on the reefs as the tide turned.

There was relief that Trudy was safe – none more so than from Brady, who raced across the sands towards her mother upon first seeing her, leaping into Trudy’s loving arms.

Trudy felt bad at having been away for longer than she had planned and was grateful to Ruby and Slade for keeping an eye on Brady in her absence, knowing that she would be totally safe otherwise Trudy wouldn’t have stayed away overnight.

She explained that Connor had taken her for a trip on his boat to see a beautiful coral reef, to get away from it all. They had enjoyed their time together so much, Trudy revealed.

“That’s crazy!” Lex had responded. “You hardly even know the guy!”

“We just clicked,” Trudy said, defending herself.

“I bet Connor’s got more than just clicking on his mind!” Lex fumed, frustrated by what he perceived to be Trudy’s naivety.

“Unlike you to be such a prude, Lex,” Ruby said. “Talk about a double standard.”

But there was more to it of course than that, which all were aware of, including Ruby. Lex just didn’t trust Connor, sure he was manipulating Trudy, who was vulnerable and desperate for love – Connor using his good looks, finding out all kinds of things about her and the Mall Rats. Lex listened to his gut instinct which told him Connor was a threat from the moment he had arrived.

Connor took offence to Lex’s criticism, the two of them getting into a heated argument, resulting in Lex swinging a punch at Connor - and having to be restrained by Slade.

All that was overshadowed, however, when Jay was the next to return – alone – and he told them what he had experienced, plunging the village into a state of emergency.

After seeing the Sea Ghost, Jay had driven back through the wasteland to Arthurs Air Force Base - finding it totally abandoned. There was no sign of Amber, Jack, Ellie or the others anywhere, to Jay’s shock.

Several clues indicated the base had been attacked. Tracks were visible from other vehicles in the central garden hub area. Furniture was overturned, doors smashed, suggesting whoever was responsible had conducted a methodical, aggressive search of the base.
